What is Metadata?

Metadata is essentially data about data.  It is the who, what, when, why, and where of the research.

Do I have to fill out Metadata?

YES!! RMBL requires that any data (GIS, GPS, or non-spatial) that is stored in our database have metadata associated with it.  If a user borrows one of our GPS units, we require metadata to be created.

Why is Metadata necessary?

Metadata allows RMBL to do the following:

  • To go back to a study site and find an exact location
  • Quality control
  • Integrate spatial and non-spatial data
  • Integrate current and future datasets
  • Provide researchers with the ability to archive data, while still allowing them to control access to their data
